The first one or two digits identify the department:

- Benton Harbor = 51-55
- Benton Twp. = 91-99
- Berrien Springs = 39
- Bertrand Twp. = 5
- Bridgman = 40
- Buchanan (City) = 46
- Buchanan Twp. = 6
- Chickaming = 7
- Coloma = 41
- Eau Claire - Pipestone = 30
- Galien = 9
- Hagar = 10 (now part of Coloma)
- Lake Twp. = 11
- New Buffalo = 43
- Niles City = no prefix
- Niles Twp. = 14
- Royalton Twp. = 17
- St. Joseph (City) = 101-109
- St. Joseph Twp. = 18
- Sodus Twp. = 19 (?)
- Stevensville = 42 (?)
- Three Oaks = 20
- Watervliet = 21
- Weesaw = 22
The second-last digit identifies the type of apparatus:
- 4 = engine
- 5 = tanker
- 6 = heavy rescue
- 7 = grass/brush engine
- 8 = utility vehicle, boat
- 9 = truck
