Parking
(#1 in the Parking trilogy)

Have you ever noticed how much time Hutch and I spend in my car?

It was a question that I'd been thinking about a lot lately. You see, we'd been on this stakeout as second backup for the fourth night in a row.  Boredom would have been a welcome change. Hutch and I had long run out of stuff to talk about. Not that the silence was uncomfortable or anything. I mean, we've been partners for too many years to let not talking get to us.

But, there I was, reduced to countin' the hours, minutes and seconds that we'd been in this car. I could think of much better uses for my car; screaming down the road after a crook, giving the poor baby a well-deserved wash, or even going parking like when I was a teenager. Now, there was a subject that Hutch and I hadn't exhausted yet - the best parking we'd ever done. I looked over at Hutch to see if he was awake. We'd been taking turns napping - that's how bad it had gotten. It was hard to tell in the light of the streetlamp, but then he shifted in the seat so I knew he was awake.

"Hey, Hutch, what's the best parking you ever had?" I asked.

I knew that he'd heard me 'cause he turned his head to look at me, but he took his time answering.

"What's the best what I've ever had?" The tone of Hutch's voice made it clear that he didn't have a clue what I was asking. I tried to enlighten him.

"You know, parking with a girl? Watchin' the submarine races, countin' the stars, maybe gettin' lucky in the back seat? When you were a teenager?" Dead silence. "Were you ever a teenager, Blondie?"

"Ha, ha, ha. Didn't your mama teach you it's not polite to kiss and tell, Gordo? And I do know what parking is, but...."

            "But what?"

"But... Oh, all right. I never took a girl parking when I was a teenager, OK?"

Have you ever noticed how sometimes the most innocent conversations can suddenly turn interesting?

I'm sure the shock of Hutch's confession must have shown on my face because unexpectedly he couldn't meet my eyes. If it had been daytime I'd have seen him blushing. So, after figuratively picking myself up off the floor, I knew that I had to hear more.

            "Wanna tell me about it?"

            "Not really."

I could see it would be like pulling teeth to get this story out of him.

Time to turn on the Starsky charm.

"Aww, come on," I wheedled. "It's not like we have anything else to talk about. I mean, you can either tell me or you can listen to me tell you about the time I took Louise Stupansky to Lookout Point."

I heard Hutch stifle a chuckle at that one. Then he sighed.

"OK, OK. I know you'll never rest until you hear all the sordid details.  But be prepared to be sorely disappointed. It really isn't much of a story."

            Now we were getting somewhere.

"Why don't you let me be the judge of that?"

There's nothing I like more than hearing about Hutch's past. He doesn't talk about himself very often, so when he finally opens up, I want to make sure I get every word. I settled comfortably into my seat.

"High school wasn't the best time for me. I guess you could say that I was a nerd or a brainiac. I got straight A's, belonged to the chess club, the debate club, the glee club; you get the idea. Do you know that I took my sister to the senior prom?" The last was said with such disgust that I had to bite my lip to keep from laughing.

Hutch continued. "Once I went to university I was able to come into my own.  I just didn't have any time to go parking; I barely had time to date. Then I met Vanessa...."

I finished the sentence. "And she wasn't exactly the type to go parking."

Hutch gave a bitter laugh. "You can say that again."

            "Ok -- And she wasn't...."

"Stop, you idiot! I didn't mean it literally!" Hutch was laughing for real now. I live for that laugh.

Have you ever noticed how sometimes you can look at a person and suddenly see someone totally different?

Well, let me tell you, I suddenly saw a whole different side of one Kenneth Hutchinson. It just didn't seem right that the poor boy had been deprived of a traditional rite of passage. It became crystal clear to me that I would have to do something about this gross injustice. But before I could decide on some brilliant course of action, the bad guys interrupted us, and away we went to save the free world once again.

It was much later when I remembered our conversation. Of course we'd managed to save the day (don't we always) and then Cap'n Dobey gave us some well-deserved time off. I took Hutch back to his place and then went home to crash. But I couldn't get to sleep because I kept thinking about Hutch and parking.

Ya know, when I was a teenager, taking a girl to Lookout Point was the highlight of a date. Sometimes there would only be a little over-the-sweater action, but when you're seventeen that seems like a piece of heaven! It just didn't seem fair that Hutch missed out on all that. But if I was going to be perfectly honest with myself, I sure as hell didn't want to set him up on a date with a woman in order for him to experience back seat Nirvana.

Have you ever noticed how sometimes the person you're closest to can turn into someone who's the most important thing in your life?

I lay in bed and turned that thought over in my head until I finally said screw this. It was becoming painfully obvious to me that I wanted to be the one to take Hutch parking. And the more I thought about it, the more it seemed like the perfect solution to my problem. Ya see, my problem is that I love my partner. Being able to admit that to myself was the hardest step.  Deciding what to do about it came a close second. Taking Hutch parking would work. It could be as innocuous as Hutch wanted it to be, or if I was very lucky, I could declare my undying devotion and not have him rip my throat out.

Careful planning would be the key. I had to be able to get Hutch on a date with me without him knowing it was a date, and then get him to agree to go for a drive. As much as I would have preferred to wine and dine him in style, I decided that going to The Pits would be less obvious. That settled, I was able to get some sleep.

I phoned Hutch when I woke up and invited him for dinner at Huggy's. Since this was something we did on a regular basis, it didn't arouse any suspicions. The only concession I did make for myself was dressing up slightly. By that I mean clean jeans and a nice shirt. I wore my leather jacket 'cause I've been told I look sexy in it. I don't see it, but what the hell, that many women couldn't be wrong.

Have you ever noticed how hard it is to act the same around a person when your feelings have changed?

Picking Hutch up and then trying to act nonchalant was one of the most difficult things I've ever had to do. I should have gotten an Academy Award for the performance I gave! I thought I was doing brilliantly until Hutch gave me this strange look as we pulled up to The Pits.

"Starsk, are you all right?" Hutch asked me.

I attempted to blow off his concern as casually as I could. "I'm fine, ya blond blintz! Except for being hungry enough to eat my way through Huggy's menu."

He seemed to buy it. We entered the bar and sat down at our usual table. I was able to cover my relief by gulping back the beer Huggy brought us. I decided then that unless I wanted to get very drunk very fast, I was going to have to put the whole parking scenario out of my head until after dinner. It was the only way I'd be able to keep my sanity. Ya see, patience isn't exactly my strong suit. Jumping in with both feet without watching where I was landing - that was more my speed. I hadn't been this excited since high school and that's sayin' something.

I was able to put all that out of my mind but it was difficult. I settled in to enjoy the evening just being with Hutch.

Have you ever noticed how being in love seems to heighten everything?

I mean, I have never gotten such pure joy out of watching someone eat and talk and just plain move. Every bite of food that Hutch took, every word that he spoke, every gesture that he made; I recorded it and cataloged it away for future reference. How was I able to do this without giving away my feelings, you may ask? Well, as I told you, I'm a superb actor. I've done so many undercover ops that this was a piece of cake. Hutch never suspected a thing. Sure, he would give me these looks every once in a while. He never said a word though, so it was probably just indigestion from eating Huggy's famous burger and fries.

I can't really remember what we talked about. I think we were pretty much all talked out from that interminable stakeout. We played pool, kibitzed with Huggy, drank some beer. I tried not to think about the end of the evening. Finally, it was time to leave. We got in the car and I put my plan in motion.

"I'm still wired from workin' all those nights," I said. "How about we go for a drive?"

"Sure, Starsk. I'm not going anywhere. Some fresh air will do us both some good." That's Hutch - always thinking about our health.

I drove through the city towards the beach. It seemed somehow appropriate that we end up at my old stomping grounds. Surprisingly, the area was deserted. I'd forgotten that it was a weeknight. All the high school kids come here on the weekends. I parked the car and relaxed back into the seat.  Hutch was giving me strange looks again. Maybe I hadn't fooled him as thoroughly as I thought.

I decided to play it cool.

"Nice view, eh, Hutch? It's so peaceful out here and with the windows rolled down you can hear the waves." Damn, I'm smooth. "Perfect way to unwind, wouldn't you say?"

Hutch just gazed at me. He didn't say a word. I was beginning to get a little nervous. I started babbling something about working too hard and needing to relax. Hutch still said nothing. He let me ramble on until I was out of things to say. Then he spoke.

"So, I'm wondering.... Is this the part where I give you a blow job or what?"

Have you ever noticed how sometimes your life can come down to one defining moment?

It was one of the few times in my life that I was speechless. I honestly didn't know what to say. It occurred to me that I was suddenly treading on very shaky ground. This was not how my well-orchestrated scene of grand passion was supposed to be played. I could feel Hutch's eyes on me, waiting patiently for my reply. I shook my head, still unable to speak. Hutch decided to turn the knife again.

"Forgive me if I'm wrong, because I've never done this before. This is the point where I'm supposed to put out, right?" That sarcasm has always been able to cut me deep.

It was time for a strategic retreat in order to regroup. Maybe I could salvage this fiasco at my place. I shook my head again, then turned the key in the ignition. Nothing. I tried again. Still nothing. A third time. Just an ominous clicking sound. I couldn't fucking believe it!

In all the times I'd gone parking as a teenager, this had never happened.  Oh sure, I pretended that I had run out of gas but it was a standard line that never was believed by any of my dates. So, there I was, at Lookout Point on a beautiful night with the man of my dreams who was glaring at me daring me to say those words.

I cleared my throat. "Uh, Hutch? The car won't start." If looks could kill I'd be six feet under. I tried again. "Honest, Hutch! You know I've been having trouble with the starter, I was going to take it in to Merle's after the stakeout, please believe me, I'm sorry!" I was a dead man.

I couldn't look at him any more. It was just too painful. All my dreams were about to vanish like so much vapor. I closed my eyes and tried to think of ways to at least save our friendship. My mind was a blank. Then I thought that I could blame it on sleep deprivation. It was a long shot but I was willing to give it a try. I opened my mouth to begin some convoluted explanation as to why I'd gone off the deep end when I felt the man beside me shaking. I quickly opened my eyes and turned to look at Hutch. He was rocking back and forth with tears streaming down his face. I felt like a shit.

"Hutch, I'm really sorry. I don't know what came over me. Maybe it was sleep deprivation. Can we just forget about it?"

Hutch gasped and wiped at his cheeks. "Please don't say any more - I can't take it." I peered at him closely. He wasn't crying, he was laughing! The jerk was laughing at me! Although I suppose it was better than him killing me. Maybe I could salvage this evening after all.

"Look," I said. "I'll call for a tow truck. While we're waiting do you think we could talk?"

Hutch nodded his head, still laughing. Despite myself, I started to chuckle too. The absurdity of the situation hit me and I laughed harder. Before I knew it, we were holding on to each other, helpless to stop our sniggering.  An enormous weight lifted itself off of my chest. Our laughter slowly died out, but Hutch didn't let go of me.

Have you ever noticed what a fine line it is between laughter and love?

It felt so right to hold Hutch in my arms. When he finally pulled himself away from me, I forced myself not to clutch at him. He didn't move very far, thank god, just enough so that he could watch me. I felt like he was memorizing my face or something. He stared at me without blinking. It was easy for me to stare back 'cause I love looking at his face. I had memorized every laugh line and wrinkle long ago. Hutch's face was as familiar to me as my own. I searched his eyes, looking for - I'm not sure what. What I saw there, though, took my breath away.

I saw love and laughter, tenderness and concern, happiness and uncertainty.  I was humbled by the power in those sapphire eyes. I wanted to drown in them, wrap that love around me like a blanket, erase any fears.

Have you ever noticed how sometimes the best thing to say is often the simplest?

            "I love you, Hutch."

I wish I could describe the smile on his face when I said that. I'm no poet but it was like the sun coming out after a bleak winter's day, warming everything that it touches. It infused my soul. Hutch brought his hands up to cup my face. He leaned forward and kissed me on the forehead, then turned my head slightly to whisper in my ear.

            "I know."

He whispered it like a prayer, a benediction, a blessing. And when he spoke again, I was reduced to ashes.

"You have no idea how much I love you right now."

The first touch of his lips on mine almost finished me. I opened my mouth eagerly, wanting to taste Hutch at last, all my patience gone. I feasted like a man given a last minute reprieve, nipping at those soft lips, sucking at his tongue. I couldn't get enough of him. I wanted to crawl right inside Hutch and never leave. I was never going to survive.

It was time to put my needs aside and concentrate on Hutch. Reluctantly I pulled my lips off his and took a deep breath. Hutch sat there with his eyes closed, shuddering slightly. I knew what I had to do.

"Babe," I whispered in his ear. "You had it backwards before. This is the part where I give you a blow job."

Hutch moaned and it undid me. I pushed him back against the door and pulled his legs toward me. He sprawled on the seat but his head was resting right on the door lock. I took off my jacket and folded it into a pillow for him.  I lifted up Hutch's head and then replaced it on the soft leather. Hutch turned and buried his nose in the jacket, inhaling deeply. I almost came in my pants.

I needed to taste him again. I pulled Hutch's t-shirt up and began licking at his stomach. I worked my way up his chest and then exposed his nipples.  I flicked at one and then the other, alternating back and forth. Hutch grabbed my head and pushed his chest up, growling.

            "Suck it."

I pulled his nipple into my mouth, sucking at it and then biting, worrying the bud between my teeth. When I was satisfied that it had enough attention, I turned to its mate. The flavor of Hutch was intoxicating. It was a heady mixture of sweat and musk and after-shave that I found irresistible.

Hutch was rubbing his groin against me. His erection was straining against his zipper. I gave one last nibble at his breast, then lifted my head.  Hutch's eyes were closed and his mouth was open. He licked his lips and I pounced. I ravaged his lips, fucking his mouth with my tongue. Hutch was groaning, bucking his hips against mine. If this wasn't going to be over before it began, I was going to have to slow down.

I sat back up and tried to catch my breath. I noticed that the windows in the car were all steamed up. The air was heavy and smelt of arousal. It did absolutely nothing to cool my ardor. I had to feed my addiction.

I turned to Hutch and with shaking hands undid his jeans. His cock sprang free as I lowered the zipper and I knew for certain then that I hadn't fooled my love one bit. I pulled Hutch's jeans down as far as I could manage and then slowly lowered my head for my first taste of pure Hutch.

I lapped at the fluid leaking from his cock head, then nipped gently at the tip. Hutch moaned. I opened my mouth as wide as I could and took more of him into me. His balls were heavy in my hand and I squeezed them as I applied suction with my mouth. Hutch screamed and held my head in place as he wildly fucked me. I released Hutch's testes and ran one finger down into the cleft of his ass. Hutch spread his legs as wide as he could, tempting me to explore further. I rimmed his opening with my finger, probing softly in counterpoint to Hutch's rocking. Then he was pushing himself down on my finger and up into my mouth, faster and deeper. Seeing Hutch lose control like that tipped me over the edge and I orgasmed, deep throating him. Hutch wailed and froze. His cock grew even larger and then he was coming in my mouth, the hot fluid pulsating down my throat. I drank it marveling at the taste of unadulterated Hutch. All too soon he was spent and slipped his softening organ out of my mouth. I rested my head on his thigh, attempting to regain my senses. Hutch's murmuring brought me back around.

"Starsky, I... I can't believe... Do you know how much I love you? That was the most beautiful gift...."

I raised my head and smiled into those bemused blue eyes.

Have you ever noticed how sometimes it's not the receiving but the giving that's what's important?

            "It was my pleasure."
