Funny, I read this at the time and just didn't get it at all. (Truth be told, I was probably looking for fhgps.)
Thank Heathen Gods for the Horizon "random story" button, because this is good stuff. A lot of those character studies are little gems - I especially like Barbossa and Bootstrap. Perceptive and poetic. And some bits made me snigger, but without breaking the spell.
