Capable of learning alien languages extremely quickly through her ability to instantly recognize common patterns, Hoshi serves as the interpreter between the Enterprise crew and new alien species, even after the universal translator is on-line. She suffers anxiety about her place on board originally, but exposure to frequent danger combined with her abilities to get her shipmates out of danger with her linguistic abilities helps her realize her value to the ship. In her late 30s, Hoshi developed the lingua code translation matrix that served as the basis for all Federation universal translators for centuries.
