Broken

The lock was broken. No doubt about it. With trembling fingers Serena pushed open the door. It emmited a slight whine of protest as it allowed a wider view. Papers were scattered everywhere. Cushions from the couch on the floor. The rose vase was overturned and dripping water onto the plush carpet. In the middle of the chaos on the desk lay a box, wrapped and tied with a ribbon.

Cautiously Serena made her way through the clutter to the parcel. A bomb? A severed head? The resentment of her co-workers had rapidly escalated in the past 6 months--she wouldn't put anything past them. Slowly she untied the ribbon, peeled back the paper. Lifting the lid to the box she saw...a large, dead, brown rat. A note to one side: With love from the 2-7.
