(Everything I Do) I Do It for You

James T. Kirk stared at the small cassette he held in his hands. It contained the final message for him from his dearest friend Spock. Spock had sacrificed himself to save the Enterprise's crew, but that knowledge brought no comfort to Kirk. He had managed to maintain a small measure of control during the Vulcan's funeral and memorial service, but the heavy weight of grief was too much for him. He began to cry. The unbearable thought intruded once more: he would never see, hear, or feel his friend again.

Tears streamed from his face as he continued sobbing. He finally straightened and put the cassette into the computer. I might as well get this over with and not string it out, he thought.

The beloved image of his friend appeared on the screen. "Jim," he said, "if you are watching this message, then undoubtably I have perished." He stopped for a few seconds to collect his thoughts. "I ....deeply regret leaving you like this. I...am unaccustomed to...expressing myself, as you are well aware of." Once more, he paused.

Kirk felt the slightest flicker of amusement at his friend's trouble of expressing emotion logically. The smile left his face as Spock continued, "I recently found a song in the musical archive that Uhura had lent me. It....expresses all that I am unable to say, my friend. Look in my personal
database and you will find it. It is entitled (Everything I Do) I Do It for You." Spock took a deep breath. "Over the years that I have known you, you were never prejudiced. You impressed me with your command abilities and you touched me time and again with your friendship and....love. I felt the same for you, even though we could never admit it." Kirk's eyes widened.

I'll be damned. And I thought I had done a good job of hiding it.

Once more, Spock paused; obviously struggling with himself. "I.....I love you, Jim. Live long and prosper, my friend. Thanks to you, I have done both." He raised his hand in the Vulcan salute, then he gradually faded from site.

Kirk sat there feeling stunned. He.....he felt the same way. He took a deep breath and accessed the computer's main database. "Computer, tie-in to Mr. Spock's personal database. Access the specified file, authorization Kirk-beta-two-zero-one."

"Working," the computer said mechanically. Music filled the room. Kirk sat back to listen.

Look into my eyes,
you will see
what you mean to me.

Search your heart,
search your soul,
and when you find me there
you'll search no more.

Don't tell me
it's not worth trying for.
You can't tell me
it's not worth dying for.

You know it's true,
everything I do,
I do it for you.

Look into your heart,
you will find
there's nothing to hide.

Take me as I am,
take my life.
I would give it all,
I would sacrifice.

Don't tell me
it's not worth fighting for.
I can't help it,
there's nothing I want more.

You know it's true,
everything I do,
I do it for you.

There's no love
like your love,
and no other could
give more love.

There's nowhere
unless you're there,
all the time,
all the way, yeah.

You can't tell me
it's not worth trying for.
I can't help it,
there's nothing I want more.

Yeah, I would fight for you,
I'd lie for you,
I'd walk the wire for you,
yeah, I'd die for you.

You know it's true,
everything I do, oh,
I do it for you.

Kirk quietly brushed the tears from his eyes. In the words of an ancient song, Spock had finally found the strength to express himself. Kirk remembered another song, perhaps one he would have used for his final message to Spock:

If only I could turn back time,
if only I could say what I still hide.
If only I could turn back time,
I would stay for night.

If only I could.

Kirk walked to the window and gazed at the dancing stars. "I understand, my friend." He paused when the tears threatened to overwhelm him once more. "I know you'll be with me; through this life and beyond."

The grieving man turned from the window and exited his quarters to assist his crew.

The End....for now.
Who knows, maybe I'll find a song appropriate for Search for Spock
