Why Are You Crying
by Lady Midath
"Why are you crying?"
Alex shook his head. "I'm not." He replied, but the tears glistening on his face told another story.
"Tell me Alex please." Fox whispered, sad to see his lover so unhappy, but all Alex would do is turn away from him, curling up against Walter's sleeping form. And all Fox could do was lie awake next to him and worry,

"Please tell me, why are you crying?" Walter asked as he reached out to card his fingers through the thick mass of dark hair. Alex closed his eyes, his head resting against Walter's chest, soothed by the strong gentle hands that stroked his hair.
"I'm not crying, I'm just tired..that's all."
Walter said nothing, then lifting Alex's face up to his own, he tenderly kissed the tears away.

"Why is he crying?" Fox asked, exasperated now. "I don't understand. He's with us now, he should be happy."
"He needs time Fox." Walter relied. "Just give him some time. Alex will be fine, I'm sure."
"If only he would tell us what's wrong." Fox said, fine lines of worry etching his features.
"He will when he's ready Fox, just don't force him"
"Okay Walter." Fox replied, but he still looked doubtful.

"Why are you crying?"
Alex shook his head. "I don't know."
Walter and Fox looked at each other, then back to their lover once more.
They had come home to find Alex curled up in a corner of the couch, sobbing as though his heart would break.
Comforting their young lover as best they could, both Fox and Walter realized that this state of affairs could no longer continue. Something had to be done. They could not bear to see Alex like this, so pale and miserable. It was time to take charge of the situation.
Sitting down on the couch next to him, Walter gathered Alex into his arms, pulling his onto his lap. With a sigh, Alex rested his head against Walter's shoulder, tears of silent grief slipping down his face, dampening Walter's shirt.
Fox sat on the other side, rubbing slow circles on Alex's back. He could the the muscles gradually relax under the gentle ministration of his hand.
"Talk to us Alex, please." Walter whispered. "Tell us what's wrong."
"We can't help you if we don't know what it is that's been upsetting you so badly." Fox added.
"Please tell us..."
But all Alex could do was shake his head and weep, uncomforted even by their presence. And all Walter and Fox could do was sit and watch helplessly, wondering what they could do to ease their sweet young lover's pain.

"Why is he crying?" Mulder asked, clearly puzzled. "I thought he was brain dead."
"Technically he is Mulder." Skinner replied. "The bullet has lodged in the brain causing severe damage The doctors say he will never regain consciousness."
Mulder frowned. "An involuntary reaction I guess. Still, it's kind of creepy."
Skinner sighed and shook his head, gazing down at the pale still form swathed in bandages lying in the hospital bed.
"I think it's rather sad myself." He murmured, then turning away left the room, Mulder in tow.
"Do you think he might be dreaming?" Mulder asked suddenly, his face thoughtful. Skinner glanced at him, then away again. He still could not come to terms with the fact that he had been the one to pull the trigger
"Well if he is, I hope they are pleasant ones." Skinner replied.

And in the quiet room, Alex lay deathly still, the only sign that he was still alive were the steady beeps from the life support machine, that and the single tear that tracked it's way down his gaunt unshaven cheek.
