Genjo Sanzo

Hakkai the sex god boy next door. As driven by his past as Sanzo and torn by conscience and morals. Mild mannered and quiet he is the peacemaker of the group and the adult that basically keeps the others on track. Even the standoffish Monk doesn't shy away from Hakkai's company. Nor does his famous temper ever seem to touch the monocled human-turned demon. Perhaps because he knows that of the three Hakkai is the least likely to put up with it for long or more importantly doesn't deserve it. Also Sanzo and Hakkai understand each other because their pasts parallel quite closely, even down to hating the steadily falling rain. His high standards often direct the path that the others take when it comes to the really important things. His habitual smile often masks his real emotions, though his friends usually see through them.

Hakkai was born a human and spent most of his formidable years in an orphanage. He was a hardass, angry at the world for the injustice that he felt had been done to him, until a friend showed him a new path to take. He fell in love with another orphan, Kanan, not knowing she was his sister. When he left the orphanage he asked her to go with him and she did. He found a job teaching and they were very happy together until the day the Black Crow clan came to their village on a mission for the centepede demon Hyakugan Maoh. The people of the village people handed over Kanan to the clan in exchange for their own lives.

Alone Hakkai, then known as Cho Gonou, tracked down the clans of the Black Crow and Hyakugan Maoh and murdered them all in retribution. Nine hundred and inty-nine demons all toll by the time he reached the cell where Kanan was kept. By then she had been raped and impregnated. Separated by the bars Hakkai could only watch and plead helplessly as she took his own knife and killed herself. Immediately after he confronted by his final and thousandth demon Chin Iisou the son of Maoh. In the battle Iisou seriously wounded Hakkai in the belly leaving him with a scar and permanent reminder of his past. With Iisou's blood on his hands Hakkai fell pray to the legend that any who have bathed in the blood of a thousand demons will become one themselves.

Where Hakkai's earcuffs first came from... I would guess from Kanzeon who was probably watching it all from above. (I could have a few choice words for that, but won't.) Anyway some how Hakkai manages to get himself out of Maoh's castle and away even with most of his insides on the outside. He is found lying in the pouring rain by Gojyo on his way home from the bar alone after being pissed off by one of the women hanging on him. Rather a fateful happening when you think about it. Hakkai already has his earcuffs at that time so there couldn't have been much time in between the fight with Iisou and his collapse for him to get them.

Hakkai was nursed back to health over the next month by Gojyo, the two of them becoming friends as their ties from the past tugged them together. As well as their understanding of each others motivations in the present. Interestingly enough in another moment of absolute fate, the day that Hakkai was going to leave Sanzo appeared at the door looking for him. An escape was attempted and almost totally pulled off as Hakkai felt he had one last mission. He was taken by Sanzo before the Sanbutsushin. We don't know what all transpired there except that they gave him a new name and a chance at a new life. So Cho Gonou died and was replaced with Cho Hakkai who returned to a changed Sha Gojyo. They have been roommates ever since.

Hakkai has a pet dragon, pure white and apparently a forbidden construct of science and magic. Hakuryu can become a jeep which the foursome use to travel west in. I am guessing that he is another God who was displaced from heaven and reborn. Namely a Dragon Lord General who was a superior to Kenren. Unfortunately I'm unclear on all of that at the moment still. We also don't know how Hakkai aquired Hakuryu only that it happened sometime between when he returned to stay with Gojyo and when the foursome were called to make the journey west.

Known 500 years ago as Field Marshall Tenpou, Hakkai was a bookworm who was very happy with his nose stuck in a book on war strategies or anything else for that matter. He was shorter of temper than Hakkai, but just as friendly and kind to the people he liked or were his friends. He was constantly admonishing Kenren for his laxidasical attitude and worried about Konzen and the fact that he found no joy in life. Tenpou took Goku under his wing when he found he liked to learn and read. Goku tended to help Tenpou keep his study from becoming one big pile of books. The Field Marshall was unhappy with the way many things were being handled, but was wise enough and diplomatic enough to be careful how he mentioned it. Interestingly enough when things began to fall apart for our godly threesome and Goku, one of the high ranking officials had Tenpou in his office. Probably in preparation for having him arrested or disciplined and made a comment to the idea that Tenpou and Kenren were lovers. I noticed that Tenpou didn't dispute it... ^_~
